Hot 100: Lil Nas X’s ‘Old Town Road’ Still #1 / One Week Shy of Tying Chart’s All Time Record

Published: Monday 15th Jul 2019 by Rashad

Despite attempts from some of Pop’s heaviest hitters including Shawn Mendes, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, and more, the past 15 weeks have seen all of them fail to unseat newcomer Lil Nas X‘s inaugural hit, ‘Old Town Road,’ from the Billboard Hot 100’s throne.

Galloping to the top of the charts on the back of historic streaming figures, the song’s initial popularity may have (arguably) been the result of controversy, but long after that news faded its enduring success can simply be attributed to monster radio airplay, digital downloads, and streaming of its original mix and various remixes.

Earning its 15th consecutive run atop the tally this week, the feat comes with news ‘Road’ is now in history books as the longest running chart-topping debut single ever (leaving the 14 week record of Los Del Rio‘s ‘Macarena’ in its rear view).  As if that’s not enough, the 20-year-old is just 1 week shy of tying the chart’s all time record.

Details inside:

The threat of dethronement from Billie Eilish‘s ‘Bad Guy’ remix featuring Justin Bieber had X fans worried, but industry analysts believe the Billy Ray Cyrus-assisted cut may have what it takes to maintain the top spot just one more week.  If it does, it will tie the all time record for longest run atop the Billboard Hot 100.

A record currently owned by Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men‘s ‘One Sweet Day’ and the 2017 hit ‘Despacito’ (Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee, Justin Bieber), if he does hold on to the Hot 100’s summit he will be the youngest person ever to lay claim to such honor.  If he doesn’t, however, ‘Road’ will still be just one of three songs to have ever held on to the #1 spot for 15 weeks or more.

For what, exactly? Because he’s gay or because this deserves to be the biggest song in history? The prior record is held by one of the greatest ballads of loss, ever. What is OTR, this years Despacito? ??‍♀️??‍♀️??‍♀️??‍♀️

If old town road is dethrowned from the top spot I truly believe it’s so popular that it will just rebound right back to #1. I think this song will be first to reach 20 weeks at #1. This could very well become the BIGGEST hit in the history of music. Lil Nas X will be the biggest 1 hit Wonder of all time.

Even with OTR losing points, I feel like he will get week 16 and possibly week 17. He still has a massive lead over #2 — 1.5:1.

His streaming drop was pretty steep for one week, and I am wondering if it is backlash from him coming out. If so, I think the drop from this week to next will be considerably smaller.

Our gay black king reigns supreme. He is definitely breaking Mariah’s record. Even post malone’s new song couldn’t knock him out from the top spot.

If only racist country radio agreed to play this song and allowed this song to appear on the country charts, the song wouldn’t have blown up,I dont even think it would have even reached the top 10. Everybody would have probably forgotten about the song by now.

    Thank u racist country radio.

Why do I feel the need to say ‘our’ instead of ‘mine’. If a 20 year old is YOUR ‘black king’ that is great but u can only speak for urself. I don’t know anything about this kid and certainly admire ‘black kings’ like Michael Jackson, Denzel Washington, Spike Lee, Tyler Perry, Magic Johnson, Bob Johnson, Nat Turner, Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King 500 percent more than this kid I don’t even know! Speak for yourself because u certainly don’t speak for me.

BYW I don’t care if he is gay or straight. It is a man’s talent and worth that matters! Tyler Perry is gay but that don’t mean I love him more than Spike Lee who is straight!

TROLLmine I AGREE. That child has very low standards for a King. Extremely low!

Paula R. Kelly has nothing to do with me. If he goes to prison or is set free what does that have to do with me?

you have to work and use the computer and internet, and if you can do that and dedicate some time each day then you can do this with no problem.
I have been working with this for a month and have made over $2,000 already. let me know if you need more help.

Cool. I’m happy for this kid. I love the song and if nothing else he should be sitting pretty for the rest of his life.
